Alert Types (previously called Dispatch Types)

Beacon allows Dispatchers several options for creating incidents and managing Responders:

  • Broadcast Alert: Sends the incident alert to available Responders and assigns them based on
    • 1) their self-reported estimated time of arrival (ETA)
      and
    • 2) the type/number of responders requested for the incident
  • Assign Responders: Allows Dispatchers to manually assign specific Responders to the incident
  • Hybrid Method (“Both”): Allows Dispatchers to manually assign specific Responders AND broadcast the alert to others. This is useful, for example, when you have multiple Responders but limited transport vehicles — or when the ambulance is 45 minutes from the incident, while there are also Responders only a few minutes away from the incident location. In such cases, it would be possible to assign an ambulance and then broadcast the alert to a large group of Responders on foot or motorcycle nearby so that Beacon can also assign more Responders to get on scene while the ambulance is en route.

These three diagrams also show how the methods differ when creating a new incident:

  1. The Dispatcher clicks Broadcast in order to send the alert to all Available Responders
  2. The Dispatcher indicates that they would like a Maximum of 3 Responders assigned to the incident
  3. If required, the Dispatcher can also select specific Responder Tags to send the alert to (read more about Responder Tags here)
  4. The Dispatcher clicks Create to broadcast the alert to Available Responders and request that they reply with their estimated time of arrival to the incident location

  1. The Dispatcher clicks the Assign button to select and assign specific Responders to the incident
  2. The Dispatcher clicks the Select Responders dropdown to open a dialog box and select specific Responders to assign
  3. The Dispatcher clicks Create to alert selected Responders that they have been assigned to the incident and are now expected to confirm when they are en route to the incident location

  1. The Dispatcher selects Both in order to Broadcast the alert to all Available Responders and also assign specific Responders to the incident
  2. The Dispatcher indicates that they would like a Maximum of 3 Responders assigned to the incident, and
  3. If required, the Dispatcher can also select specific Responder Tags to send the alert to (read more about Responder Tags here)
  4. The Dispatcher then clicks Select Responders to open a dialog box and select specific Responders to assign
  5. When the Dispatcher clicks the Create button, Assigned Responders will be asked to “Confirm En Route” and Responders receiving the broadcast alert will be asked if they can respond and how long it will take them to arrive on-scene (Read more about the different Responder Type workflows here)

Note: Responders assigned by a dispatcher do not count toward the maximum number of Responders mentioned in Step #2


Important rules to remember:

  • If the Assign button is selected, you are required to assign at least one Responder
  • If the Both button is selected, you are required to assign at least one Responder
  • The first message that is sent to responders will differ depending on whether they were sent a Broadcast Alert or if they are assigned to the incident
    • If Dispatch sends out a Broadcast Alert, the responders will receive Message 1: Incident Alert
    • If Dispatch Assigns Responders when creating an incident, those responders will skip over Message 1 and begin with Message 2: Confirm En Route
